The International English Language Testing System or IELTS is an exam used as a parameter to establish your proficiency in the English language. If you are looking for higher education options in top universities across the United Kingdom, New Zealand, Australia and Canada, IELTS is one of the tests that you will be required to clear before the government can process your immigration application. The test is used as an effective tool for establishing the listening, reading, writing and speaking skills of an individual.   The reading section of the IELTS is often considered to be a tough nut to crack; however, before you get all worked up and jittery, here are a couple of tips for IELTS reading for you to walk that exam like a pro.

Reading carefully

One of the best tricks to understand any kind of content provided to you is to read it patiently. Try to assimilate what the author is trying to imply, to understand the main idea of the question. Invest a couple of minutes for reading the questions before you start answering them. Reading newspapers, magazines and books can come in handy for not only increasing your vocabulary but also enhancing your comprehension skills.

Increase your reading speed

The IELTS reading test is time-based and you have to find answers to the questions within a stipulated time, in order to attempt the entire question paper. Make sure you enhance your speed to find answers while you are reading a passage. An increased speed will not only help you find answers really fast but may also leave you with some time to conduct a last-minute revision of what you’ve written.

Increase your vocabulary

A good vocabulary is among the most essential factors that can help you score well. Vocabulary can be enhanced by regular reading, attempting comprehension passages, penning down common paraphrases that may be difficult to understand and then working on them. Also, try not using a dictionary while you’re attempting an IELTS practice test.

Scan and identify keywords

Every question that you attempt will have some keywords to help understand the question better; a quick scan o the question will help you spot them easily.

Skip understanding the entire passage

The idea is to get answers quickly by understanding the gist of the passage, which means it is not necessary to understand the entire length and breadth of the passage. You will be able to get hold of answers as long as you understand the main idea of the passage.

Practice makes you perfect

It is very important that you practice your reading skills on a regular basis. Try reading across genres and topics and pay attention to the content. This will not only enhance your vocabulary and also hone your understanding skills.

Preparing for IELTS reading is a skill you are going to be using for your entire life!
